| Overview |
In 2005, only 16 adoptions were completed in El Salvador by US Citizens. However, that may be poised to change. El Salvador appears to be a country that is becoming more open to the idea of international adoption, and several adoption agencies are now offering programs there.
Children Available:
There are infants, toddlers and school age children available. Waiting sibling groups are ready for placement.
Parent Qualifications:
Couples must be married for at least 5 years. Couples between 25 and 45 are eligible to adopt children 6-months old and older. With each year over 45, an additional year is added the minimum age of the child. For example, couples aged 46 are eligible to adopt children 1 year and older. Singles may also adopt children using the age guidelines above. Two related children can be adopted at the same time.
Travel:
One trip of approximately 2 weeks is required, with one parent needing to stay in-country the entire time.
Timeline:
From dossier until referral is approximately 3-6 months. Travel will happen about a month after that time.
