| Overview |
Date: 9/10/2009. As of this writing, Costa Rica has just re-opened for international adoption (program closed in 2003). Costa Rica is a beautiful, small country located in Central America. The program is very small with very few adoption agencies working with this country.
Children Available:
Current Costa Rican law prohibits adoption of children less than four years of age, except in cases in which the child is part of a family group. Sibling groups of two to five members ranging in age from 2-13 are available.
Parent Qualifications:
Applicants must be between the ages of 25 and 55. Older families will be considered on a case by case basis.
Couples must be married 5 years. Single parents are eligible.
Travel:
Both parents must travel for the matching and court hearing. This program is very new and does not have a firmly established travel criteria. It is estimated that two trips to Costa Rica will be required, with the first being 2 weeks and the second being 1 week.
Timeline:
The average time from completion of country application (dossier) to match with a child is estimated to be 6 to 8 months. The average time from match to travel is 1 month.
